Career Opportunities > Health and Safety Coordinator

Westport Innovations is a leading developer of technology and products designed to reduce pollutant emissions from heavy-duty diesel engines. The patented new High Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI) technology is the basis for a new product line of natural gas fuel injectors that can be used to replace diesel fuel injectors in existing engines or to be incorporated in the construction of new diesel engines. Westport also has expertise in other natural gas engine system components including gaseous and cryogenic fuel pumps and electronic controls and monitoring systems. Westport has built a world-recognized team of leaders focused on aggressively commercializing its technology.

Westport has a current opening for a Health and Safety Coordinator to join the Engineering Services Team.

Your mandate as Health and Safety Coordinator will be to build on already established safety programs, ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, codes and standards and develop and deliver employee safety training programs. The Coordinator will also be responsible for preparing incident reports, conducting internal Health and Safety audits and providing recommendations to address deficiencies. You will also prepare Westport’s emergency response plans, first aid protocols and hazardous material inventories. Additional responsibilities include the development of safe work policies and procedures for employees and contractors and maintain all required documentation. The Coordinator is also expected to chair the H&S Committee, the Emergency Response Team and the Level 2 First Aid Team.

The successful candidate will hold a Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Heath and Safety with experience in the H&S field. Holding a professional safety designation would be an asset. A solid understanding of safety requirements specific to high pressure gas systems, electrical codes, industrial hygiene and emergency response planning is required. Additionally a strong working knowledge of WorkSafe BC policies and requirements is a must along with experience in developing and instituting company-wide safety policies. The ability to develop the appropriate safety documentation in a concise and complete manner is required. Experience in a high pressure or compressed gas environment is an asset.
