Position Summary:
The incumbent for this position will report to the Manager, Worker Safety and Emergency Management. As a key member of the Safety and Emergency Preparedness team, the Safety Specialist takes a proactive, prevention-oriented and continuous quality improvement approach to develop, implement and monitor Occupational Health and Safety programs and policies. The Safety Specialist ensures implementation of the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and TSH’s compliance with the best standards of practice within the provincial and federal legislative regulatory framework. He/She will demonstrate the ability to influence others and be able to establish credibility with all levels of the organization; challenging the status quo; and being a catalyst for positive change.
Some of the key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• hazard identification and risk assessment; participating in the development and implementation of strategic safety opportunities that support the organization’s vision, goals and strategies;
• tracking and monitoring hospital compliance for legislative requirements and best practice standards;
• participating and providing input into Occupational Health, Infection Control, Risk Management and Continuous Quality Improvement processes to meet the Hospital standards;
• participating in WSIB Safety Group activities;
• assisting in development and implementation of Emergency Preparedness activities; and
• working with the department in developing Unit Specific Safety Plans
The successful applicant must commit to working in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and hospital policy, utilizing protective equipment provided and identifying and reporting hazards.

Required Qualifications:
* Completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in an Occupational Health and Safety or Industrial Hygiene program.
* Minimum three (3) to five (5) years experience in Occupational Health and Safety.
* Knowledge of and experience in the practical implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations and standards (i.e. Ontario Fire Cod, Ontario Building Code, Environmental Protection Act, WHMIS etc).
* Excellent communication (visual, written and verbal), presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
* Demonstrated excellent leadership skills with the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff.
* Demonstrated ability to set priorities and manage multiple responsibilities and meet timelines with minimal supervision.
* Demonstrated excellent organizational, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
* Excellent project and change management skills.
* Proficient in MS Office

Preferred Qualifications:
* Occupational Health and Safety Experience in a Healthcare setting.
* Certified member of Joint Health and Safety Committee an asset.
